Legitimate Work From Home Business Opportunity August 27, 2008
Posted by Business Marketing in : Business and Marketing , add a commentWouldn’t it be wonderful if every advert offering you away to make an income was a legitimate work from home business opportunity. Sadly this isn’t the case and if you fall foul of an advert or site that isn’t a legitimate work from home business opportunity then it can leave you feeling pretty depressed. You also risk-
1. Losing money. If a home business opportunity is a scam or just a very poor guide then you could lose anything from $10 to $10000.
2. Wasting your time. You can spend hour upon hour putting time(and money) into it but if you haven’t been given a legitimate work from home business opportunity then it will all be for nothing.
So what steps can you take to avoid falling victim to a work from home scam? Unfortunately it is getting harder and harder to find a legitimate work from home business opportunity but they are still around. Affiliate marketing and dropshipping are two examples of a legitimate work from home business opportunity which can be very profitable and also can be run successfully even on the smallest of budgets.
But even in these markets there are many scams on the internet. The reason there are now so many scams is simply that the scam artist know so many are interested in finding a legitimate work from home business opportunity that they feel they are easy pickings, especially as so many who are interested in these opportunities are also vulnerable in one way or another as people mainly looking for a legitimate work from home business opportunity tend fall into one of these categories
Disabled
Elderly
Mums wanting to stay at home with there children
People on low incomes
People with debts.
There really is no guaranteed way of avoiding a scam but a few things you could look into are
How long a site/program has been established
Do they offer support
If there’s a fee do they offer a money back guarantee
Use coolwhois.com to see how long the domain name is registered, a legitimate work from home business opportunity will register the site for a long period of time.
There are sites that will have done all this research for you such as review sites but even these can be misleading so be weary if they don’t have a single negative comment about any products or have no bad reviews at all on there site. This doesn’t have to mean the review site is been dishonest but it is a little strange if every item they review is perfect or near to it.
As I’ve already said there’s no guaranteed way of avoiding scams and finding a legitimate work from home business opportunity but there is help available to make it a less daunting task.
If you want to earn thousands of pounds working from home, like me, then I can help you find genuine work from home opportunities. Starting a Business - Freedom Can Come in Three Simple Questions August 26, 2008
Posted by Business Marketing in : Business and Marketing , add a commentOne definition of freedom is, “liberty from rule by another.” Many hope for freedom to quit their job or start a new business, but few truly succeed at achieving liberty from the rule of another. Don’t be discouraged. Freedom is within your grasp…you can escape the daily grind. And here’s where to start:
Question 1: If you could do anything, money’s no object, (but you have to work) what would you do?
Most people’s dreams are snuffed out by the responsibilities of kids and bills; but, spending some time to daydream and answer this question is crucial. Dream a vision that drives you to sheer excitement then ask the second question….
Question 2: What’s stopping you from doing what you want to do?
Most people I talk to about this answer with a one word answer, “Money.” The vision they developed in answering the first question suddenly becomes dim as they slip back into their disappointing reality…back to the daily grind. But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can move on to the third question and start building towards the dream.
Question 3: What do you need to do to overcome the obstacle described in Question 2?
If you need money to start a business or to be able to quit your job and start a new career, start by paying off your debt. This will give you more disposable income. Then find an additional source of income. You can start a part-time job or a part-time home-based business. Start saving until you have the money you need to achieve your dream.
Freedom is closer than you think. Just start and don’t let any of your old excuses stop you.

Business Etiquette For Letters & Emails
Posted by Business Marketing in : Business and Marketing , add a commentWhen writing Business Letters and Emails, what are the basic rules one should follow? Your letter might be the first point of contact with another business, and how it’s written, will demonstrate your communication skills to the other party.
Always date your letters, and make sure that you spell the persons name correctly. If you are unsure, call reception and ask for the correct spelling. I am amazed at how many people send me letters with my name spelt incorrectly.
Use clear headings and subheadings. A well constructed letter is much easier to understand.
Use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation - A well written document says a lot about you. Most software has a “check spelling and grammar” function. Make sure that you always use it.
Plan your letter and decide what you are trying to convey before you start writing. It’s a good idea to make some notes, before you start writing the letter.
Be concise and to the point. Use the minimum number of words to convey your message. Try and use simple words that everybody can understand. Try to keep the recipient in mind when writing, especially when writing to someone overseas.
Do not use technical terms or jargon, unless absolutely necessary. Your reader might not be familiar with them.
Space out your letter. This makes the message easier to understand. Start a new paragraph whenever you can as a well spaced out letter is easier to read and understand. It is a lot easier on the eye!
Keep templates, for standard letters. I find that over time my templates improve as I make minor, but significant changes, to the wording and style.
Keep your humour for your telephone conversations. Jokes can easily be misinterpreted in written communication.
If your message is very detailed, it might be simpler to break it down into two letters. Send the first letter and follow it with a phone call to make sure that the message is understood before sending the second part.
Always be polite. Make sure that you ask or request, rather then demand. Don’t use informal terms in the beginning of your relationship. You can start being less formal once a relationship has been established.
Answer all correspondence quickly and clearly. Often, in business, the other party could lose interest if they do not believe that they are important to you, or if another business responds first.
Never use shortcuts! You are not sending a text message.
Make a copy of any written correspondence and file it away for future reference.
Once you have written the letter, read it carefully and think about the message you are trying to convey, before posting or hitting the send button.

Business Communication Etiquette August 23, 2008
Posted by Business Marketing in : Business and Marketing , add a commentThe idea that people need to have feedback, appreciation and information is a good basis for understanding how and why excellent business communication is important and compelling for success.
In your very best relationship - whether your spouse, best friend, sister, co-worker - you can easily communicate with them in a high value way. You telephone, email, write notes, make plans and generally stay in contact with them because you want a connection and a relationship with them.
In building very good relationships in business, it is absolutely the same. What is different in a business relationship is that you are communicating with colleagues and you don’t always know them as well as a dear friend. However, they need the same attention that a good relationship needs.
These needs are:
*Returning a phone call
*Following up on a request
*Listening intently
*Appreciative communication
*Clear communication with details and directions
*Doing what you say you will do
*Remembering what is important to them
*Valuing what is most important to them
Our communication styles and methods are being stretched by email, technology, lack of time and resources that limit our ability to do so much in our day.
But there are rules of common courtesy that have NOT changed since the inception of humans dealing with each other in a high value way. If you want to be a remembered, trusted and respected leader, you will practice these courtesies with every business contact.
If you take the time to examine what is important to you, I think you will find that they are also the courtesies that you expect in all business communication, actually how you would like to be treated and communicated with.
Email - Not only should you be returning emails in a timely way, but you need to set the context each and every time of why the email is important and what information it is that you want to deliver. Spam filters help, but in order to more easily control your email load, you need to be in more control of what you generate yourself. In business, be brief, be informational and be gone.
Cell phones - The ring tones that are available now are fun outside of the office, networking situations, client lunches etc. Put your cell phone on manner mode or shut it off. Take and make calls when you are with people sparingly. Most people are not interested in listening to your phone conversation no matter how stimulating you think they might be. If you need to take or make a call, excuse yourself and then make it brief.
Returning phone calls - Whether you think you have time to return the call or not, find out what people need, make sure you are clear on whether you can help them or not and then get back to your own work. People who return phone calls are trusted and respected. You do not need to make the calls long. In fact, returning all calls twice a day instead of doing it piece meal all day long is a good way to manage your time more appropriately.
Here are some additional basics that will help you grow your own identity and brand which will identify you as a trusted and respected up and coming leader:
Practice your handshake - Ask a friend to shake hands with you and then give you feedback. Firm is good.
Eye contact - Learn to look at a person when they are speaking.
Body language - 55% of our nonverbal communication is our body. Watch what your body is saying
about you.
Business cards - Get one and have them with you ALL of the time. You should include an address, email, telephone number, full name, what you do and your title. If your company does not provide a business card, get one for you anyway. The fast print companies all have programs you can easily and quickly make one for you.
Holding doors - Opening a door for someone is not just a guy thing anymore. Ladies, if you get to the door first, open it.
Standing and greeting - If you are being introduced, stand, reach out your hand and shake their hand. This is not a gender issue. Women in the workforce can show respect by standing and shaking hands.

If any of you subscribe to CPU magazine, you know I’m a monthly columnist. I’ve become a huge user advocate. I even recently suggested that the hardware and software industry adopt an operating system that isn’t Windows… in order to benefit Windows. More competition on the desktop is good for everyone. I got an email here about something I know I have heard about in the past. I just haven’t had an occasion to tell you all about it. Sam pointed me towards ReactOS.
ReactOS is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture.
The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change. Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.5 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use.
Certainly the hope for open-source will grow. I’ve had a long-standing belief that open-source is the future of software. It’s more than just a marketing tactic. Not only do you get software for free, it’s about learning from the code as well. I’m no coder. I can work my way around a file or script, but I can’t do much of it on my own from scratch. I can do a bit of HTML and CSS… but I only learned that by looking at what others have done.
Thanks, Sam, for passing this along. If any of you know about something equally unique, let me know about it! I’d love to take a look.

FAP844: Nursing shortage, cheaper textbooks

Student Financial Aid News
+ Inside Higher Ed: An annual survey by the National Retail Federation to project back-to-college spending by college students sees a 7 percent drop this year, to $599.38, from $641.56 last year, Reuters reported. With college students paying more for gas, there is less money available for other goods.
+ US News: Textbook prices, which have nearly tripled in the past 20 years, may finally start to decline thanks to some new laws, technology, and upstart companies. Undergraduates who take advantage of the new alternatives could easily slash their textbook costs in half this coming academic year. That means the typical student could save more than $300. “We’re making progress,” says Nicole Allen, who heads the affordable textbook drive for the Student Public Interest Research Groups. “Things are changing for the better.”
+ New laws, eBooks, open source, and rentals
+ Reason #5: piracy is easy. 31 seconds to find the book mentioned in the article on a DVD with 235 other textbooks, and no, I’m not going to tell you how, but that’s how easy it is

+ Chris writes in: My mom, who is just turning 60, went back to school for nursing, and because her grades are so good in the prep classes, she’s been accepted into the actual program.
+ My mother currently works at the hospital full time as a unit clerk, and makes just over $17/hour, and after taxes and retirement, she brings in just under $1,000 every two weeks.
+ Her tuition for the course will actually be covered by the hospital and student loans, so that’s not a problem at this time.
+ The brick wall we’ve hit comes from the course itself. It requires 40+ hours per week in class time and real-world experience. Real-world experience is basically interning without pay. She would have to change her work schedule to evenings and weekends, and would be lucky if she could handle 20 hours/week.
+ At her current pay, her income would be reduced to roughly $1000 / month.
+ Her living expenses amount to roughly $1800 / month.
+ She needs to come up with an additional $800 / month for 9 months. Then she would return to work full-time for the summer. Then she would complete her second year where she would again need $800 / month for the next 9 months.
+ Since this technically isn’t ‘tuition’, where would we start to look for this kind of money? Obviously grants and/or scholarships would be the optimal choice, but most are geared for young people with their entire lives (or at least several decades of productivity) ahead of them. Any idea where to start looking for seniors grants/scholarships?
+ Barring ‘free money’ and your own $10K scholarship, what are her other options, short of selling her house in this down market? I’d appreciate any direction or links you could send our way.
+ Today’s scholarship, of course
+ This is a unique time and opportunity for your mom due to a severe shortage - demand is on your side
+ Connecticut has had a major nursing shortage looming for quite some time
+ Contact CNA, CLN, CT DHE, and the administrators of every hospital nearby, and ask if they have a program for COLA issues exactly as you’ve described
+ Would someone exchange a promissory note for $7,200 or more in exchange for X years of service?
+ Check out Three Rivers Community College nursing scholarships directory

Listen now:

Due to various personal reasons, I’ve been uncharacteristically unconversational (not a real word, but whateva). My last post was July 9th and I guess I feel a little more comfortable today to get back into the swing of things. So here goes with some linkety-link:
- Conversational marketing is in wikipedia. No mention of me or Join the Conversation so I added it myself. My experience with Wikipedia is that this will probably be removed, so if you’d like to add to this entry, please feel free to do so.
- Westport Library is twittering. Now if that isn’t the twitting point, I don’t know what is.
- More twitter….a VERY interesting approach by Len Kendall to solving Twitter’s service woes. Could this be the future of community-led business model monetization?
- Group M pairs search with social media. The sound you just heard was the sound of dumbness.
- Steve Lubetkin publishes a podcast on my SNCR keynote. Love the pic, Steve
- The rock stars of 2.0 - mildly humorous (read: ridiculous) that I’m above Larry Page + Sergey Brin, Jimmy Wales, Stowe Boyd, Doc Searls, Steve Jobs, Steve Chen and more. Vote early and often. First prize is the real rock start accolade: Guitar Hero.
- The 5 creepiest ad techniques of the (near) future. And they are: 5) Tracking every site you browse and every show you watch, 4) Custom-made shilling, 3) Fusing ads and culture, 2) Going undercover and 1) Getting in your head. The real sad part to this article is how many of these worst practices are in place right now!
- Firefox apparently set a world record on June 8 with a bumrush-type community effort to download the latest version of the popular browser. I heard mixed reports about how this turned out, with server/file outages impeding the day’s efforts. That reminds me…now that I’ve purged my 50+ tabs, it’s time for me to update Firefox as well!
- What the F*** is social media? Find out here. This presentation from Marta Kagan is getting a ton of views. Congrats to her!
- Anti-conversation meme going around. Really very pathetic and when I get the strength I’ll respond to this neurotic search for the next new big thing
- Wearing the brand. A very nice “campaign” for CNN using T-shirts as ways of immortalizing headlines in a very smart and creative way.
- Interesting post relating to Delta Skelter, where I’m being compared to Kevin Rose and Robert Scoble insofar that influence has been misused for personal gain. I weigh in with my response in the comment section. It’s a good debate, although I’m still not thrilled with being compared to Rose and Scoble (see the rock star point)
- More Skelter…an Ad Age opinion piece from Craig Daitch on my Delta experience.
- One Red Paperclip’s Kyle MacDonald published a book on his accomplishment, but like many athletes who went out on top, perhaps should have stayed retired. He’s trying to barter once again, this time using his house as the starting point. From what I read, lightening hasn’t struck the same place twice.

Seth Godin: Sliced bread and other marketing delights
TEDtalksDirector
19 min - May 17, 2007
http://www.ted.com In a world of too many options and too little time, our obvious choice is to ignore the ordinary stuff. Marketing guru Seth Godin spells out why, when it comes getting our attention, bad or bizarre ideas are more successful than boring ones. And early adopters, not the mainstream's bell curve, are the new sweet spot of the market.
